From the Forest
Forests and trees have been the major inspiration as well as source of materials for these works. The European Beech tree has provided the germ of much creativity; from its tiny saplings on the forest floor up to majestic elegant branches; from the pointed buds of wintertime, to the leafy canopies of sunshade in summer - the forest is truly an exciting place.
Alder Growth
Pine cones from the Alder tree and branches on dyed tea bags
The pods from the Alder Tree look like mini pine cones. These cluster together, elegantly twisting and turning from branches in many directions. It is the growth that features in this work, extending from a central point. The natural stains on the dried tea bags seem to echo this growth. Some of these lines have been enhanced with watercolour.

Branching Out
Forest branches, silk painting, tea bags, seed pods and embroidery
This piece was created for a mini-textile exhibition entitled 'Celebration'. It is a celebration of textures and forms in the natural environment. The branches create a grid showcasing each mini work within.

Fungi
First: painted silk on fabric, with dyed tea bags
Second: painted cotton on fabric, with dyed tea bags and embroidery
These two pieces were inspired by the growth of fungi on fallen trees in the forest. The 'frilled' pieces were created by painting and cutting spirals of fabric - silk and cotton - and sewing onto the dyed backgrounds. In each case, tea bags were used to mimic and suggest the texture of the fallen tree pieces. Embroidery was applied in places adding depth to the works.

Up and Up
Tea bags, embroidery and dye on tea bags
The bark of a tree is full of rich texture and pattern demanding close scrutiny and attention. This work was inspired by piles of logs destined for the fire. The deep ridges of the bark created subtleties of colour and exciting shapes and design - a feast for the eyes

Look Up
Silk painted leaves on silk painted background
This work was inspired by looking up at the leaves of a Beech tree in the forest. The sunlight was streaming through the branches and many different hues and patterns on the leaves could be seen. The leaves were painted separately to the background, then carefully cut out and attatched by sewing. Some of these pieces were curved by sewing thin wire to the back of the leaf.

Criss Cross
Woven Beech tree branches, beading
The Beech tree has characteristic pointed buds throughout winter. These burst into blossom during spring. Small branches found on the forest floor have been woven together in a plain weave to create this overlapping structure. The buds are a feature, pointing in all directions.

Woven In
Beech saplings woven into plain weave, with string
A plain weave, with string secured these Beech saplings, showcasing the characteristic pointed buds. The eye is drawn up from the bottom of the weaving, following the stem. The saplings stand in a proud row, as though they are strong in growth. Embroidery was added to create an illusion of many more in the background.
